Winning Photos 2008 Calendar Contest
Last
year, Bank of Lancaster held its first
annual contest for amateur photographers to
showcase the beauty of our area during all
seasons of the year. We received over 200
entries and had 5 local photographers from
the area select the winning photos which
included a cover winner, 12 monthly winners
and 8 honorable mentions.
The
calendars were distributed in December
during our Customer Appreciation Day. There
were so popular that our stock was depleted
before the end of the year.
In case
you did not receive a copy, we wanted to
share the beautiful photos with you. There’s
also a brief description identifying the
photographer and information about the
photo.

Calendar Cover – Grand Prize Winner
Connie
Ruble of Kilmarnock is our Grand Prize
Winner. She was inspired by the beautiful
autumn colors and the mist on the water from
their pier on Lawrence Cove off of Dividing
Creek. It wasn’t until she had seen the
picture she had taken with her new camera
that she appreciated the sunrise and the
magnificent clouds. The log is used
regularly by ospreys and herons during meal
times and provides an ideal bird watching
location.

The fog
had set in over the Ampro Shipyard on
Carter’s Creek and Lynn Haynie of Reedville
wanted to capture the morning atmosphere, a
peaceful serenity that blanketed the area.
Looming in the fog is Carter’s Creek,
a menhaden snapper rig.

February
The
fresh snowfall was captured early in the
morning by Paul Ferguson from the front
porch of his home in Irvington. Due to his
travels and not having seen snow since 1966,
Paul was captivated by the peace and quiet
when he first opened his door.

Every
spring at William “Bud” Disney, Sr.’s
property on Hull Creek in Northumberland
County, daffodils bloom and burst forth in a
multitude of colors. With several varieties
growing, they all seem more spectacular than
the other. Bud’s interest in photography was
marked by his retirement and moving to the
Northern Neck.

A proud
Mother Goose poses by her nest on Meachim
Creek for Tammy Jackson of Topping,
Middlesex County. The Mother Goose didn’t
seem to mind Tammy and her camera. After the
babies were hatched, the Mother Goose
brought them
within a few feet of Tammy as she fed them
cracked corn and bread.

May
Photography provides us the opportunity to
record an instant in time which can then be
shared with others and Jim Campbell of
Tappahannock felt that this was one of those
settings. This photo of the Potomac was shot
on a beautiful day from Marshall Beach in
Northumberland County. Much of the setting
in this photo has been replaced by riprap as
a result of Tropical Storm Ernesto.

Nancy
Constance of White Stone shot this photo on
a misty morning with the early sun slanting
through on Antipoison Creek. She especially
likes this scene which shows Three
Sigma’s intent to sail…and Nancy’s
first-hand experience of being onboard the
Nautor Swan 44 when she’s foaming along is
“sheer exultation.”

August
Fascinated by nature’s fury, Jay Coleman of
White Stone watched the oncoming storm that
was producing lots of very sharp lightening
in hopes of catching a really good shot,
which he did! The photo was taken from his
yard which is just down river from White
Stone beach and with the sky being lit up;
you can view the Rappahannock River Bridge.

Edgar
Doleman of Heathsville is fascinated with
dawns, especially in autumn and winter, on
the Great Wicomico. He feels they are often
dramatically lovely and he wanted to capture
it. Edgar took the photo on the Great
Wicomico River at Mila Neck, about 3 miles
up from the mouth of the river.

October
Pathway to Autumn
was taken by Laura Dent of Callao on the
walkway leading to a dock on Hampton Hall
Creek in Northumberland County. Laura was
walking with her dog to the dock as her eye
was drawn to the dogwood echoing the color
of the kayak on the path. The quality of the
late afternoon light intensified the colors
of the leaves everywhere. Within minutes of
taking the photo, the light changed and the
scene was gone but captured forever.

November
Fishing
was slow but that didn’t keep Troy Bashinski
of Midlothian and his family from enjoying
the Chesapeake Bay. He shot Smith Point
Lighthouse from his boat just outside of the
Little Wicomico River. He wanted the framed
photo in his house to keep him close to the
place that is special to him and his family.
Troy enjoys photography because it helps
remember a moment, event or place that is
special.

December
An early
winter snow was captured by Austina
Ivanyshyn of Colonial Beach. The wet snow
and early morning light at the end of
Austina’s driveway in Pine Hollow,
Westmoreland County was breathtaking and
worth the brisk walk. It was a moment in
time that ended as soon as the shot was
taken and the sun’s rays continued to rise.
